Statement of Solidarity with KAPATID | Migrante Canada
July 18, 2025

Migrante Canada condemns the permanent ban imposed by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Catapang on Fides Lim, spokesperson of Kapatid -the Friends and Families of Political Prisoners.
The BuCor’s arbitrary ban on Fides Lim is a punishment, a warning, and a threat to those who would question, criticize, challenge unfair protocols and regulations of the BuCor, its officials, and personnel. Migrante Canada stands in strong solidarity with Fides Lim and Kapatid in standing their ground against the BuCor.
Among the many members of Migrante Canada are former political prisoners, relatives of former political prisoners, and members of Kapatid. We have the highest regard for Kapatid for its work not only for the protection of the rights and welfare of political prisoners, but also for the release of the political prisoners, most especially the sick and the elderly, the nursing mothers and their babies and the women.
Fides Lim, spokesperson of Kapatid, presses the Department of Justice to investigate the BuCor for among other things, its failure to comply with human rights standards, including the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners. Lim also calls on Congress to examine the budget of BuCor in the light of subhuman prison conditions and violations of the rights of prisoners.
Migrante Canada supports these demands of Kapatid.
Fides Lim, in the statement of Kapatid, declared, “This ban on me is not about “maintaining order” but a deliberate act of reprisal intended to silence criticism, punish the truth-teller, and deflect attention from institutional abuse, neglect, and starvation behind bars.”
Migrante Canada calls on its members and friends of Migrante to stand in support of Fides Lim and Kapatid as they stand their ground, refusing to be intimidated and silenced, refusing to be bullied, and staying strong in the knowledge that they stand on legitimate and righteous grounds.
Fides Lim and Kapatid work very hard to recognize the humanity of detainees and their families, even when the prison system refuses to do so. ###
