Migrante Canada welcomes the arrest today of former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte for his crimes against humanity committed in his "war on drugs." The official warrant of arrest was issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and confirmed by Malacañang Palace.
Duterte's brutal and deadly "war on drugs", which has been described as the war against the poor and marginalized, killed close to 30, 000 people. Rodrigo Duterte is also responsible for the summary execution of 422 political activists, the frustrated extrajudicial killing of 544 others, among many other cases of torture, trumped up charges, and enforced disappearances of human rights activists and land defenders.
Migrante Canada welcomes the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte for his crimes against humanity, as do the victims and lawyers who have filed these cases at the ICC. We wait for his immediate transfer to The Hague where he will stand trial.
The arrest of human rights violator Duterte is a victory in the people’s unyielding fight against impunity. It is the start to a trial for the whole world to see, the start to the road to justice, a conviction and the appropriate sentence. The families of the victims and their lawyers continue to hope and keep the faith that they will get justice.
We must remain vigilant and demand that the Marcos government ensures accountability, without fear or favour, for other cases not filed or not within the scope of the ICC.
Impunity will not last forever—the people’s collective resistance will prevail.
Let this historic moment inspire further the fight to protect and defend the Filipino people’s rights and freedoms.
