Luksang Bayan: Day of Mourning of Filipino Communities and Supporters across Canada

April 27, 2025

Migrante Canada continues to mourn the tragic incident at the Lapu-Lapu event yesterday, April 26, 2025, in Vancouver, BC. As of today, the confirmed casualties have risen to 11 and at least 20 people severely injured.

Lapu-Lapu festival is a product of the organizing efforts of the Filipino community in Vancouver to organize and celebrate the rich history of the Filipino resistance under the Spanish colonization. However, this significant occasion was met with sorrow and tragedy.

As we await for full and verified information, we continue to call and demand full and thorough investigation and swift justice. We call on the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa and the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver to provide immediate and sufficient assistance to our Kababayan.

We have seen our kababayan in tears, mourning their loved ones who were brutally victimized. Their testimonies underline the horror of what happened.

In light of this, Migrante Canada calls on the Filipino communities across Canada to stand in solidarity with our kababayan in Vancouver and hold Luksang Bayan or prayer vigil. We declare today as the Day of Mourning of Filipino Communities and Supporters across Canada.##
