Ka Louie Lives On in the Struggles of Migrants and the Filipino People From Migrante Canada

June 9, 2025

Migrante Canada pays our highest tribute to Luis “Ka Louie” Jalandoni, a revolutionary leader whose unwavering commitment was rooted in the struggle for genuine peace, national liberation, and the defense of the rights and dignity of the Filipino people—including the millions of migrants who toil far from home.

Ka Louie was a towering figure in the revolutionary movement and played a pivotal role as chief international representative and peace negotiator of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP). His decades-long participation in the peace negotiations with the Government of the Republic of the Philippines was anchored in the vision of a just and lasting peace—one that addresses the roots of armed conflict: landlessness, joblessness, foreign domination, and widespread inequality.

For migrants, Ka Louie’s work was profoundly relevant. The peace talks he championed brought to the fore the urgent socioeconomic issues that drive Filipinos to leave the country—poverty, lack of jobs, political repression, and systemic injustice. His advocacy for meaningful social and economic reforms gave voice to the aspirations of Filipino workers and migrants who seek not only livelihood but dignity and justice.

Beyond the negotiating table, Ka Louie was a powerful symbol of internationalist solidarity. His presence in global platforms inspired migrant organizations, labor unions, and solidarity networks to connect their local struggles with the broader fight against imperialism and neoliberal exploitation. He reminded us that the Filipino diaspora is not separate from the national democratic movement—rather, it is an integral part of it.

Ka Louie was a source of inspiration to countless youth, grassroots leaders, and overseas Filipino workers. His principled leadership, humility, and deep love for the people continue to light our path.

His life reminds us that solidarity knows no borders, and that our struggles—whether in the Philippines or in the diaspora—are bound by a common cause. We honour his legacy by advancing the movement for genuine change and by standing resolutely with the Filipino people wherever we may be.

Mabuhay ang alaala ni Ka Louie!

Mabuhay ang pakikibaka para sa pambansang kalayaan at makatarungang kapayapaan!

Mabuhay ang nakikibakang sambayanang Pilipino!
