WHO IS MIGRANTE CANADA
MIGRANTE-Canada is an alliance of Filipino migrant and immigrant organisations in Canada. It has member organisations in BC, Alberta, Winnipeg, Toronto, Barrie, Ottawa, Montreal and New Brunswick. Migrante-Canada is part of a global network of migrant and global based progressive organisations. We are a chapter of Migrante International - a global alliance of migrant Filipino organizations in the Philippines and abroad with presence in Asia, the US, Canada, Europe and The Middle East.
- Educate, organize and mobilize Filipinos Canada-wide
- Promote the rights and welfare of Filipinos migrants in Canada
- Support overseas Filipinos in partnership with Migrante-International, the global alliance of overseas Filipinos
- To generate support for the struggle of Filipino people for a just and humane society
- To work with other migrant organizations, trade unions and social justice organizations through building alliances and coalitions on common issues.
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
CHAIRPERSON: MARU MAESA (Ontario)
Maru has been a migrant advocate / organizer since she was in Hong Kong working as a domestic worker. She is currently a caregiver under the Livein Caregiver Program. She is also active with iWworkers, a caregiver organization in Greater Toronto Area.
VICE-CHAIRPERSON: ANA CAGAS (British Columbia)
A former caregiver herself, Ana is a strong defender of migrants rights. She is an organizer and founding member of Migrante BC.
SECRETARY GENERAL: CHRISTOPHER SORIO (Ontario)
Perry as most people knew him, has been a community organizer in Toronto for more than 20 years. Perry's activism goes way back in the Philippines during the Marcos dictatorship where he became a political prisoner. He is a founding member of Migrante Ontario and is based in Toronto.
DEPUTY SEC. GEN.: ISIDRO DE GUZMAN (Québec)
Sid was a former youth organizer with the League of Filipino Students in the Philippines. He is currently active organizer for Filipino Workers Support Group, an organization based in Montreal that organizes migrant and factory workers.
FINANCE OFFICER: JOMAY AMORA-MERCADO (Manitoba)
Jomay was a former migrant worker hired under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. She is currently assistant to Manitoba Minister of Heritage Culture and Tourism Flor Marcelino. Jomay was an active organizer in the Philippine before she came to Canada.
